RENEWAL OF REGISTRATION
Form No.: 02-841
Statute: AS 05.25.055 Regulation: AAC

Boat registrations are valid for three years and the registration expires on the last day of the month at the end of the three-year period. The month and year of expiration are shown on the Certificate of Number. The Validation Sticker that must be displayed on the boat shows only the year of expiration.

Boat owners will be sent a renewal notice approximately 60 days before the expiration date. The Certificate of Number and the renewal notice will contain a Registration Renewal Number (RRN) that may be used to renew on the Internet. Owners may also renew by mailing the renewal form, previous registration or a boat application to DMV along with the fees or they may renew at any DMV office. The additional registration fee for renewing vehicles at a state DMV office does NOT apply to boats.

Normally a boat will retain the same expiration month. There are two instances in which the boat will be given a new expiration month:

  • If the boat is transferred to a new owner, the boat will be given a new month and a full three- year registration, regardless of the status of the previous owner’s registration.
  • If the owner remains the same and the registration is expired for more than a year, a new registration period will be started.

To renew a registration, the owner must complete a Boat Registration Application (Form 02-841), submit the last registration or turn in the renewal notice and pay the appropriate fees. If there are changes to the information on the last registration or renewal notice, the applicant must make the corrections to the information. (i.e. Mailing address, residence address, boat name, color, etc.)
