Vehicles designed to transport 15 or more passengers, not including the driver, for compensation are considered to be buses.  See the Commercial Driver License (CDL) SOP for requirements on obtaining a CDL to drive a bus. (C-001, C-010, & C-130)

A bus that seats 20 or more passengers and is used exclusively in a business for transporting visitors and tourists is considered a TOUR BUS. Tour buses have their own special class code and fees.

Body Styles: Bus, Tour Bus and School Bus = BU

TOUR BUSES DO NOT HAVE AN OPTION FOR ANNUAL REGISTRATION.

*Buses are subject to Heavy Vehicle Use Tax (R-107) and a PRISM check (R-108), if they meet the weight requirements.

PLATES:  Standard issue plates. 3 alpha / 3 numeric (Example: DRG589)

PLATE TYPE NUMBER: 8201000 for Gold Rush and 8221000 for standard (blue & gold) non-personalized. See specific plate type for special issue plates. (Personalized ~ A003000 Standard, A001000 Mountain, A002000 Caribou & A006000 for Statehood Plates)

NOTE: All school buses used for pupil transportation must be painted National School Bus Chrome Yellow. A school bus that has been converted to a motor home (T-270) or is used for a purpose other than transporting pupils must be painted a color other than National School Bus Chrome Yellow.

03/26/09 ~ Added reference to PRISM

12/03/07 ~ Added plate type number.

03/10/06 - Changed "Passenger" plates to "Standard" plates. Passenger plates were 3 alpha / 3 numeric. Truck plates were 4 numeric / 2 alpha. These were combined to "Standard" plates.
