DEFINITIONS:

Motorcycle: A vehicle that has a saddle and is designed to travel with not more than three (3) wheels in contact with the ground, not including a farm tractor.

Motor-Driven Cycle: A motorcycle, motor scooter, moped or similar conveyance with a motor attached and having an engine with 50 or less cubic centimeters of displacement.

Bike Bugs: Certain motor devices are manufactured as attachments to bicycles. These devices assist the rider only when pedaling and are not designed, intended, or used as a constant power source. BICYCLES WITH SUCH ATTACHMENTS ARE EXEMPT FROM REGISTRATION.

Motorcycles and motor-driven cycles are required to be registered and titled providing they are in full compliance with the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards.

STREET VS. DIRT BIKES:

Federal law [49 CFR Part 567] requires that a label shall be affixed by the manufacturer to a permanent member of the motorcycle as close as practicable to the intersection of the steering post with the handle bars, in a location such that it is easily readable without moving any part of the vehicle except the steering system. This label must include the statement:

"This vehicle conforms to all applicable Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards in effect on the date of manufacture shown above."

NOTE: Dirt bikes cannot be titled and registered, even when a “kit” is used to add lights, signals, etc. The motorcycle must be “manufactured” to meet the standards and cannot be upgraded at a later time to obtain title and registration.

DISABILITY TABS:

Disability tabs are available for motorcycles. See R-155 for procedures. If a person is selling a motorcycle that had a disability tab, be sure to either obtain the sticker or assign a new plate to the motorcycle.
