A trailer is a vehicle designed for carrying persons or property and being pulled by a motor vehicle.

DOLLY

A "dolly" is designed to distribute the weight of a load bearing trailer and is not designed to be used in a trailer capacity by itself. Alaska does not title or register this type of equipment, although some of the other states may require either title and/or registration.

COMMERCIAL TRAILERS:

As of January 1, 1999, all commercial trailers pay a one-time fee, per owner, and are issued a plate without validation tabs. The registration will show “permanent registration” as the expiration date. Commercial trailers that were currently registered as of January 1, 1999, did not have to pay any additional fees and retained the plate previously assigned to the trailer. For statistical purposes DMV continues to use the same class codes (31 - 34) based on the unladen weight of the trailer. Have the customer estimate the weight if it is unknown.

When a commercial trailer is sold, the new owner must establish the permanent registration under their business name by transferring the title and paying the one-time registration fee, per owner.

The following trailers are considered commercial and must pay commercial fees. Any trailer:

1.
  that is being leased AND/OR
2.
the customer has selected YES to the question “Is Vehicle Used Commercially?” on the application AND/OR
3.
the trailer is being registered in a business name, with the following exceptions:
    a)   Trusts (T-390)
    b)   A trailer transferred to a Dealer name and held for resale. (T-80)

Trailers used for interstate transportation and registered in a jurisdiction other than Alaska may be eligible for dual registration (R-345).

NON-COMMERCIAL TRAILERS:

A non-commercial trailer is any trailer that is not titled and/or registered in the name of a business or being leased, unless the customer selects YES to the question “Is Vehicle Used Commercially” on the Application for Title and Registration (Form 812). The weight is not required; however, if the unladen weight is available, enter it in the ALVIN record. If the weight is not available, enter an estimated weight.

CHANGE IN USE

  • NON-COMMERCIAL TO COMMERCIAL: Permanent registration is assigned. Registration fee to change to a permanent registration must be paid by the new owner.
  • COMMERCIAL TO NON-COMMERCIAL: Start registration over in the month the transaction occurs.
