Motor vehicles primarily designed for hauling goods or property and for normal road use are classed as trucks or cargo vans. Registration fees for trucks and cargo vans are based on the unladen / empty weight of the vehicle.

NON-COMMERCIAL:

The following vehicles are considered non-commercial for registration purposes. Any vehicle:

1.   with an unladen weight of 10,000 pounds or less AND
2.   the question on the application, “Is Vehicle Used Commercially?”, was marked NO, AND
3.   the vehicle is registered in the name of an individual (not a business or a leased vehicle). See the exception for dealers under “COMMERCIAL”.

Certain vans and panel trucks designed and used primarily to transport people are classed as passenger vehicles (R-115).

COMMERCIAL

AS 19.10.399(2) "commercial purposes" means activities for which a person receives direct monetary compensation or activities for which a person receives no direct monetary compensation but that are incidental to and done in furtherance of the person's business.

The following vehicles are considered commercial and must pay commercial fees. Any truck or cargo van:

1.
  over 10,000 pounds unladen weight AND/OR
2.
  the question on the application, “Is Vehicle Used Commercially?”, was marked YES, AND/OR
3.
  the vehicle is being registered in a business name, with the following exceptions:
    a)   Trusts (T-390)
    b)   A vehicle transferred to a Dealer name and held for resale. (See T-80)

Trucks used for interstate* transportation and registered in a jurisdiction other than Alaska may be eligible for dual registration (R-345).

*Interstate commerce (CFR 49 390.5) means trade, traffic, or transportation in the United States-
  (1) Between a place in a State and a place outside of such State (including a place outside of the United States); or
  (2) Between two places in a State through another State or a place outside of the United States; or
  (3) Between two places in a State as part of trade, traffic, or transportation
Intrastate commerce means any trade, traffic, or transportation in any State which is not described in the term ``interstate commerce.''

INSURANCE [AS 19.10.300]

Commercial vehicle owners of trucks with an unladen weight over 10,000 pounds must have and maintain liability insurance in the following amounts:

  1. $200,000 for property damage in a single occurrence.
  2. $500,000 for bodily injury or death in a single occurrence.

Proof of insurance is not required at the time of registration; however, proof must be filed with Commercial Vehicle Enforcement prior to commercial use.

VEHICLE WEIGHT

The unladen (empty) weight is recorded in the Division records and will appear on the vehicle registration. If proof of the unladen weight is not available from supporting documents or DMV resources the customer may be required to provide a scale weight slip. The weight is entered in section 1 of the application. If scales are not available, the customer must estimate the vehicle weight in the affidavit section of the Application for Title and Registration (Form 812).

*HEAVY VEHICLE USE TAX (R-107) & PRISM (R-108)

Commercial vehicles with an unladen weight of 8,000 pounds or more must provide proof of payment of Heavy Vehicle Use Tax prior to registration or submit a Heavy Vehicle Use Tax Declaration (Form 846).  The vehicle owner must provide items required to conduct a PRISM check.

PLATE TYPE NUMBER: 8201000 for Gold Rush and 8221000 for standard (blue & gold) non-personalized. See specific plate type for special issue plates. (Personalized ~ A003000 Standard, A001000 Mountain, A002000 Caribou & A006000 for Statehood Plates)

*Chassis Cab is generally not an acceptable body style. This type of vehicle is sold by the manufacturer as complete without the rear component. Such vehicles are used to add camping units, etc. The body style is that which is visually identifiable upon completion. If the chassis cab has not been modified, the body style Chassis Cab may be used.
