Special license plates are available for use on vehicles containing mobile radios. These license plates are referred to as amateur radio, call sign, ham radio or call letter plates.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:

  • Vehicle owner (individual or organization) must hold a valid Federal Communication Commission (FCC) amateur radio operator's license.
  • The vehicle must contain or carry an amateur radio transmitter.
  • An individual or organization may have one set of amateur radio plates for each radio license issued to them by the federal government.

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Certificate of Eligibility, Form 830 (Original, renewal or transfer)
  • Application for Title & Registration (Form 812 - Original Alaska registration)
OR Vehicle Transaction Application (Form 821 - duplicate or transfer)
  • Copy of the current FCC license. (original, renewal or transfer)
  • Application for Personalized plates, Form 803 (original or replacement plates) See R-335
  • Copy of current vehicle registration, if available.

NOTE: Original requests and requests for replacement plates are processed at the Anchorage Field Office, Research Department. See Appendix A for the current address.

Renewals, duplicates and transfers may be completed in any office.

As it can take up to 12 weeks to receive the plates, be sure that the registration will not expire before the plates arrive. If it will, change the class code to the applicable class code as shown below and charge the applicable fees for that class code. Note on the application that the customer has applied for amateur radio plates.

BE SURE TO FORWARD THE APPLICATION AND DOCUMENTATION FOR THE PLATES TO THE RESEARCH DEPARTMENT. DO NOT SUBMIT IT WITH YOUR BATCH WORK.

For original issues on a first time Alaska registration, issue a standard plate for the customer to use until receipt of the requested plates.

The $10.00 additional registration fee applies if the customer is renewing in person; however, does not apply if the renewal is processed at the same time as an original or replacement plate request.
