Fees | Permanent Registration | Plates

Vehicles owned by Government Agencies qualify for reduced registration fees and may obtain unique Government Exempt license plates. Leased vehicles are not eligible for government exempt plates.

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS

 
1.
Application for Title and Registration (Form 812) with a title request or a Vehicle Transaction Application (Form 821).
 
2.
Statement on application that Government Exempt plates are requested.*
 
3.
Registration fees if the registration is expired.
  4. I/M certificate (R-430), if required.
  5. Government vehicles are exempt from Heavy Vehicle Use Tax requirements. (R-107)

*Alaska law does not define Native tribes and tribal village councils as governments for the purposes of this statute and they are not eligible for Government Exempt plates. They are entitled to Charitable Exempt (R-320) plates.

*Government plates are issued in sets of two. When issuing a government exempt plate for a motorcycle or trailer, give one plate to the customer and recycle or discard the second plate.

FEES: When the vehicle is sold to a private individual, full fees are due and registration starts over. If an I/M is required, administrative fee of $2.00 applies.

If your office does not have Government Exempt plates in inventory:

  • Contact your supervisor for a license plate number.
  • Issue the registration and tabs to your customer.
  • Your supervisor will mail the license plate to the customer.
  • When there is not an Alaska license plate on the vehicle, issue a temporary permit (T-090) and immediately clear the permit with the plate number given to you by your supervisor.
