Processing Notes

Some commercial vehicles (including trailers) operate in more than one jurisdiction. The vehicle operators may either obtain a commercial trip permit (R-160) or pay full registration fees in Alaska. Since these vehicles are operated in jurisdictions other than Alaska their titles and registrations should remain with the owner and/or operator of the vehicle. A common example of this is a Canadian owned vehicle that operates regularly between Alaska and Canada.

These vehicles may acquire what is called a dual registration and the vehicle may display more than one valid plate and have more than one valid registration certificate. These vehicles are issued a “Registration Only” in Alaska (T-50).

Customs documents are not required to issue dual registration.

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS

• Application for Title and Registration (Form 812) completed in full and signed in ink.
• Current registration from another jurisdiction. (Keep a copy and return the original.)
• Affidavit required: “Non-Alaska based / Dual registration”
• A mailing and residence address outside of Alaska is acceptable.
• Canadian Vehicles: Must provide proof of the payment of heavy vehicle use tax (R-107) or must submit a Heavy Vehicle Use Tax Declaration (Form 846).
• A PRISM check may be required. See R-108 for additional information.

PROCESSING NOTES:

• Enter "Y" in the heavy vehicle use tax field if the vehicle has an empty weight of 8,000 pounds or more. (As the vehicle is currently registered in the applicants base state we can assume that Heavy Vehicle Use Tax proof has been filed in the base state. We will require proof of Heavy Vehicle Use Tax payment if the applicant renews the vehicle.)
• Enter a message in ALVIN (T-4). Example: “Dual Registration”
