A "historic vehicle" is a motor vehicle 30 years or more in age. The procedures vary depending on if the vehicle is used primarily for historical exhibition or for normal roadway use.
HISTORICAL EXHIBITION
Available for vehicles that will be driven or moved upon a highway for the primary purpose of historical exhibition or similar activity [13 AAC 40.010 (19)].
- Vehicle may be in a company name or individual(s) name.
- Vehicle must be at least 30 years old.
- Plate configuration: HA 1 - HZ 999 or customer supplies two Alaska license plates for the year that the vehicle was manufactured. The plate may not duplicate a license plate already in the ALVIN database and cannot exceed six (6) characters or digits.
Application requirements:
- Application for Title & Registration (Form 812) or Vehicle Transaction Application (Form 821). In the comments/affidavit section, the customer would state that the vehicle will only be used for exhibition or similar activity.
- One of the following statements is also required:
- “Requesting Historic Vehicle Plates”
- “Historic vehicle - Use license plate number _______.”
- Issue Historic Vehicle license plates or use plate number supplied by customer, provided it does not exceed six (6) characters or digits.
- Do not issue month and year tabs.

NORMAL ROADWAY USE
These procedures apply to a vehicle that will be registered for normal roadway use.
- Vehicle must be at least 30 years old.
- Vehicle may be in a company name or individual(s) name.
- Plate configuration: Any Alaska plate for year of vehicle manufacture and class type, provided it does not exceed six (6) characters or digits.
Application requirements:
- Application for Title & Registration (Form 812) or Vehicle Transaction Application (Form 821). In the comments/affidavit section, the customer would write “Historical Vehicle - Use plate #_____”.
- Customer must supply two Alaska license plates that correspond to the year that the vehicle was manufactured, which may not duplicate a license plate already in the ALVIN database and may not exceed six (6) characters or digits.
- Issue month and year tabs as per normal registration procedures.

*One-time fee per owner. Charge the $10.00 fee each time the ownership is changed, in addition to the title fee [AS 28.10.421(d)(1)].

If your office does not have Historic Vehicle plates in inventory:
- Contact your supervisor for a license plate number.
- Issue the registration and tabs to your customer.
- Your supervisor will mail the license plate to the customer.
- When there is not an Alaska license plate on the vehicle, issue a temporary permit (T-090) and immediately clear the permit with the plate number given to you by your supervisor.
