Forfeiture/Seizure
Vehicles owned by the state, municipal, or borough governments and vehicles seized by local or state ordinance may be sold at public auction.
THE VEHICLE MUST BE TITLED IN THE PURCHASER’S NAME BEFORE IT CAN BE RESOLD.
STATE, MUNICIPAL, OR BOROUGH SALE TITLE REQUIREMENTS:
- The original title, properly released by the appropriate government agency.
- The last issued registration, if available.
- The odometer reading at the time of sale.
- An Application for Title and Registration (Form 812) completed and signed in ink.
ALASKA DEPARTMENT OF REVENUE SALE TITLE REQUIREMENTS:
- A bill of sale (BOS) or purchase order from the Department of Revenue that contains:
a. Complete and correct vehicle identification number, the year and make of the vehicle.
b. A statement that the vehicle was sold for taxes owed.
- A lien release from the lienholder of record, if any.
- Odometer reading at the time of sale.
- An Application for Title and Registration (Form 812) completed and signed in ink.

SEIZURE/FORFEITURE SALE TITLE REQUIREMENTS:
- A Bill of Sale For a Forfeited Motor Vehicle from the state or local agency. The bill of sale must contain:
a. Complete and correct vehicle identification number, the year and make of the vehicle.
b. A statement that the vehicle was sold in compliance with an order of forfeiture.
- Odometer reading at the time of sale.
- An Application for Title and Registration (Form 812) completed and signed in ink.
- The applicant may also provide one of the following. These documents are not required, but they are to be taken in if submitted with the title work:
a. District Court Criminal Judgment of Forfeiture Against Driver
b. District Court Civil Default Judgment
c. Stipulation for Voluntary Forfeiture or Disclaimer or Waiver of Interest in Vehicle
NOTE: If the name shown on DMV records does not match the name shown on the Bill of Sale, check the record carefully to assure you have the correct record. If you do, you may continue processing even when the name does not match our records.
A lien release is NOT required as the order of forfeiture will contain a provision to extinguish the lien or direct how the lien will be satisfied.
