A Homebuilt Trailer is a trailer that was built by a person(s) other than a manufacturer who issues a bona fide Manufacturer's Certificate of Origin. Homebuilt trailers may be classed as either commercial or non-commercial.
TITLE REQUIREMENTS:
Title in accordance with the procedures for a new vehicle (T-10).
- The homebuilt trailer must be titled in the builder’s name before it can be sold.
- A notarized Affidavit of Homebuilt Trailer (Form 819) is required in lieu of a Manufacturer's Certificate of Origin. The affidavit must be signed by the builder.
- An Application for Title and Registration (Form 812) must be submitted with the transaction.
- An AK Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) is issued and assigned (T-120) to the trailer. This will be the permanent VIN. Advise the applicant to affix the VIN sticker to the trailer tongue. The VIN may also be stamped or engraved into the trailer tongue as the sticker could easily be removed or lost. When entering the assigned VIN in ALVIN, be sure to enter the AK in addition to the assigned numbers. Example: AK 456987 would be entered as AK456987.
If the applicant supplies a VIN, use the AK VIN as the primary VIN and enter the applicant’s VIN as a secondary VIN.
