Vehicles owned by the State of Alaska are issued Official Use license plates by the Department of Transportation (DOT). The Division of Motor Vehicles issues titles for these vehicles. The license number is provided by DOT prior to issuance of a title. The Official Use license plate number is entered in the license plate field in ALVIN and is shown on the registration as the license plate number. The number should be preceded by a “V”. If it is not, enter a V in front of the number provided by DOT.

The Anchorage and Fairbanks DMV field offices are the only locations that issue titles for State-owned vehicles. Fairbanks issues titles for State-owned vehicles used by the University of Alaska Fairbanks. All inquiries about titles for State-owned vehicles should be referred to the Dealer/Fleet Unit. See Appendix A for the current address.

See R-420 for further information on State plates.

We do not charge a fee for State-Owned Vehicles.

SALE OF A STATE-OWNED VEHICLE

The requirements for titling a vehicle previously owned by the State are the same as for titling any used vehicle. These title transactions are processed by all field offices, business partners and commission agents. The registration starts over, all applicable fees are required, and proof of an emission certificate for vehicles requiring I/M.
