Diovan HCT® Generic to be Covered

Exclusivity period to expire March 31, 2013

A generic form of Diovan HCT®, called valsartan hctz was introduced on September 21, 2012. Typically, generics should be used whenever available and appropriate to help lower the copays for members. However, in this instance, the generic form of Diovan HCT®, cost more than the brand due to a manufacturer exclusivity period. Members were affected in the following ways:

  • Members were charged the generic copay for the brand Diovan HCT® when the new generic was launched in September.
  • The generic would not be covered until the generic manufacturer exclusivity period expired.

As of March 31, 2013, the manufacturer exclusivity period for the generic valsartan hctz will expire. The generic valsartan hctz pricing will be less than the pricing for Diovan HCT®. At that time, you may be affected in one of the following ways:

  • Valsartan hctz claims will be processed as generic medication for your applicable copay. If you choose to continue use of Diovan HCT®, it will be treated as a brand medication and you will be subject to the higher brand copay.
