PERS Survivor Benefits

  • If you are a spouse, qualified same-sex partner, or beneficiary of a recently deceased member of the Public Employees' Retirement System, please contact the Death Benefits Unit or call (800) 821-2251 to get information on benefits that may be available to you.
  • If you are a retired member and have selected the 66-2/3% Joint and Survivor Option and your spouse or qualified same-sex partner has recently deceased, please contact our office at the telephone number above.

As a member of the Public Employees' Retirement System your spouse or qualified same-sex partner at retirement is eligible for continuing survivor benefits if you have elected to receive your pension benefits under the Joint and Survivor Option. A continuing survivor benefit must be elected if you are married unless your spouse agrees to another form of benefit. If you wish to continue both pension and health benefits for your spouse or qualified same-sex partner in the case of your death, you must have elected a Joint and Survivor Option.

75% Joint and Survivor Option

Your benefit is actuarially reduced from what it would be normally. After your death, your spouse or qualified same-sex partner would receive a lifetime, monthly benefit equal to 75% of your reduced benefit. If your spouse dies first, your benefit does not change.

50% Joint and Survivor Option

Your benefit is actuarially reduced from what it would be normally. After your death, your spouse or qualified same-sex partner would receive a lifetime monthly benefit equal to 50% of your reduced benefit. If your spouse dies first, your benefit does not change.

66-2/3% Last Survivor Option

Your benefit is actuarially reduced from what it would be normally. However, if your spouse or qualified same-sex partner dies first, your benefit would be reduced to the 66-2/3% survivor benefit. If you die first, your spouse would receive 66-2/3% of your reduced benefit.
