The State of Alaska now receives its dial-up services from GCI as a part of the Telecommunications Core Services Agreement.

Dial up Service Plans and Charges

Dial up Remote Access

Dial up State network remote access and Internet service will be provided by connection to GCI's local access numbers and will be billed to departments at a flat rate of $17.00 per month.

Dial up Internet Access

Dial up Internet access service, without any state network access, is also available for organizations which require that option at $17 per month. This service is often used for contractors or other partners. If third party billing is required, please provide all necessary billing information.

Dial up 800 Access

Toll-free dialing access is available and will incur additional charges at a per minute rate of $0.10 (dialing from the lower 49 states) or $0.14 (dialing from Alaska). Billing for 800 services will be calculated monthly for each account and invoiced on the corresponding agency's GCI bill.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I obtain dial up service?

GCI has established a process with the State of Alaska for providing RAS (Remote Access Service) dial up accounts.

All dial up users must work with their department's authorized Electronic Service Order (ESO) contact to complete an ESO form and remote access user agreement to request dial up service with GCI. Both the ESO and the agreement must be faxed to the Service Center at (866) 561-1855 or emailed to SOAServiceCenter@gci.com.

After receiving the forms, the Service Desk will contact you within 24 hours to set up your dial up account and password and assist you with any computer configuration issues.

What information is available to assist me with setting up my dial up access?

GCI provides dial up setup configuration assistance on their web site, which is available at the following location: http://support.gci.net/kb/kb93

In addition you may always call the Service Center at (888) 565-8680.

Who do I call when I need assistance with this service?

Who should use the 800 access numbers?

GCI has provided an 800 dial up number for state employees who are not located in areas with local service or are traveling on business. Please note that additional per minute charges will apply when 800 dial up services are utilized.

I don't see a local dial up number for my location. How should I connect?

While GCI has provided an 800 dial up number for state employees who are not located in areas with local service, GCI may have broadband service via cable modem or wireless access point available in your area. Please contact the Service Center for more information.

Dial up Login Process

Windows 95, 98, 2000, XP

To access the State of Alaska network on your desktop:

  1. Double click on the dial up shortcut icon that you created to access the State of Alaska network.
  2. Type in your user name and password
  3. Click on the Connect button.
  4. A connection status screen will display and can be minimized. If at any time the connection fails your computer will display an alert.
  5. To disconnect, maximize the connection status display and click Disconnect.

Dial up Setup Process

Windows 2000 & XP

To create a dial up connection on your desktop:

  1. Click Start, then select Run.
  2. In the box type "inetwiz"(without quotes) then click OK.
  3. Click the dot that states Using my modem, then click Next.
  4. Type the phone number you plan to connect to and click Next.
  5. Type in your username and password, and click Next.
  6. Type in the name to call this connection (example: State of Alaska Dial-up), and click Next.
  7. Select No for Internet e-mail and click Next.
  8. If XP, check Add a shortcut to this connection to my desktop. Click Finish.

Windows 95 & 98

To create the dial up connection on your desktop:

  1. Click on the Start button.
  2. Select Programs.
  3. Select Accessories.
  4. Select Dial up Networking.
  5. Double click on Make New Connection.
  6. Type in an identifying title for the dial up connection. (example: State of Alaska Dial up.)
  7. Select your modem type from the list and click Next.
  8. Type the phone number you plan to connect to and click Next.
  9. Click on the Finish button when complete.
  10. From the Dial up Networking window, click and drag the newly created dial-up icon onto your desktop.
  11. When the Shortcut window prompt displays, click Yes button to create a shortcut on your desktop.
