How To Become An Approved Driving School

Your Alaska DMV partners with Approved Driving Schools that teach both basic Class D Driving and/or Commercial Driving. If you would like to become a partner please contact Alaska DMV for more details.

NOTE: After you have met the requirements with this Division there will be other agencies you need to work with to ensure compliance with local, state and federal government requirements.

SCHOOL REQUIREMENTS

Class D School Only

If you want to teach Class D driving please provide the following:

  • SCHOOL
    • Application completed and signed for Driver Training School or Facility License
    • $25 Application Fee (Check or money order made to the State of Alaska)
    • Current Certificate of Insurance as defined in 2 AAC 91.080 (7)
    • Copy of Current Business License
    • Current Fee Structure and Refund Policy
    • Proof of nationally certified course of instruction (AAA)
    • Examiner Fee of $5 for each (Check or money order made to the State of Alaska)
    • Instructor Fee of $5 for each (Check or money order made to the State of Alaska)
    • Copy of road test routes - 3 routes each for Class D
    • School Inspection
  • VEHICLES
    • Copy of current vehicle registration for all vehicles and trailers
    • Vehicle Inspection Report or DOT Annual Inspection report by a certified mechanic. Please include the full name and address of mechanic and copy of mechanic's license or certification
  • PERSONNEL
    • Administrative
      • List of all users that require access to Alaska DMV Skill Test Appointment & Reporting (STAR) system (i.e. facility user or site user, Examiners or Instructors)
      • Application completed and signed by each STAR user
      • Full driving record for each applicant, within the last 30 days
      • Successfully complete STAR training
    • Examiners / Instructors
      • List of all Examiners and Instructors with Alaska Driver License numbers
      • Application completed and signed by each Examiner and/or Instructor (AS 28.17.041(c) and Moral character is defined by 13 AAC 85.900(7))
      • Professional Code of Ethics Form completed by each Examiner or Instructor
      • Full driving record, within the last 30 days
      • Fingerprint Card
      • $48.25 check – Must be payable to State of Alaska
      • Successfully complete Alaska DMV Class D Examiner/Instructor course

Commercial Driving School Only

If you want to teach Commercial Driver (CDL) training please provide the following:

  • SCHOOL
    • Application completed and signed for Driver Training School or Facility License
    • $25 Application Fee (Check or money order payable to the State of Alaska)
    • Current Certificate of Insurance as defined in 2 AAC 91.080 (7)
    • Worker’s Compensation Insurance
    • Surety Bond
    • Copy of Current Business License
    • Current Fee Structure and Refund Policy
    • Proof of registration Entry Driver Level Driver Training (ELDT) at https://tpr.fmcsa.dot.gov/
    • Examiner Fee of $5 for each (Check or money order payable to the State of Alaska)
    • Instructor Fee of $5 for each (Check or money order payable to the State of Alaska)
    • Copy of three (3) road test routes
    • School Inspection
  • VEHICLES
    • Copy of current vehicle registration for all vehicles and trailers

If you want to teach Commercial (CDL) and Non-Commercial (Class D) Driver training, please provide the following:

  • SCHOOL
    • Application completed and signed for Driver Training School or Facility License
